Penuel Ashram, Thampalakadu, is a care home for psychiatric patients and a de-addiction centre for alcoholics and substance abusers. Psychiatric patients are often abandoned by their families and are rejected by society. Many psychiatric patients cannot be looked after in their homes due to their violent behaviour patters. So they are placed under our care. At present, 85 patients are residing in the ashram. Hundreds of patients from Kerala and other states in India, were given proper rehabilitation care and treatment during the last 22 years. Many have recovered and have been restored to their families. All the work in the Ashram is done by a team of volunteers. The Ashram was built in 1998 with a capacity to house 50 inmates. Over the years due to increased intake of mentally sick people we had to increase the living space. Now we have an installed capacity for only 125 people. Over and above this we are getting more and more requests from patients who due to the gravity of their illness cannot be maintained in their homes.
